Internal Erosion Remediation and Dam Safety
Geosyntec is a consulting and engineering firm that works with private and public sector clients to address new ventures and complex problems involving our environment, natural resources, and civil infrastructure.
Internal erosion is considered to be one of the leading causes of dam failures worldwide. This is particularly true for dams constructed over complicated geology (i.e., karst), such as those located throughout the southeastern United States. Geosyntec Consultants is one of several key players in an ongoing internal erosion remediation project at a major dam in the region. The project is one of the largest of its kind in the United States and construction is ongoing. This presentation will discuss the following:

the dam’s construction history to highlight internal erosion vulnerabilities

the observations which initiated the remediation project

a technical discussion of the remediation project including the general construction sequence

an overview of Geosyntec’s role in the project.
Presenter:
Max Cange is a Principal Geologist with Geosytec Consultants. Mr. Cange studied Geological Engineering for his Master’s degree at the South Dakota School of Mines, and Geology for his Bachelor’s degree here in Chattanooga. He has been with Geosyntec for four and a half years, and currently works in the Chattanooga office.
